Starbucks employees protest Pride decorations removal 2023
Pride is now celebrated during the month of June in honor of the LGBTQ+ community. With Pride month comes a heightened awareness of LGBTQ+ issues, and many businesses change their logos to reflect the rainbow flag.
In addition, it is common for stores to display the Pride flag and other LGBTQ+ memorabilia to demonstrate support for the community and the month. However, Starbucks employees across the United States have reported that the coffee chain is prohibiting the display of LGBTQ+ flags and Pride merchandise in select stores.
In response, Starbucks employees have created a petition challenging the notion that Pride flags cannot be displayed during the month of June.
The petition states, “In a time when LGBT+ rights, transgender rights in particular, are under attack, it is crucial that both customers and partners feel supported and welcomed.”
It is also noted that both employees and consumers benefit from the decorations, with employees stating that adorning stores for Pride month allows them to “feel more involved with the store and free to express themselves.”
Starbucks is rumored to prohibit LGBTQ+ decorations during Pride month.
The petition asks, “Why is the company backing away from supporting its LGBT partners?” “What is to be gained by making every store depressingly identical and devoid of character?”
At the time of writing, the petition has more than 2,500 signatures and is growing.
The Starbucks United Workers Group has also been active on Twitter, criticizing the company’s stance on the issue and demanding a change.
Starbucks is propelled by a large number of LGBTQ+ employees, but management has neglected to materially support the LGBTQ+ community.
Time will tell whether Starbucks corrects the error. Nonetheless, they have yet to comment on the petition or the allegations that they are anti-LGBTQ+ friendly at this time.
