Mississippi News Anchor Criticized for Citing Snoop Dogg 2023
ackson, Mississippi, news anchor and meteorologist was removed from her morning spot on WLBT and her bio was taken down from the station’s website after she said Snoop Dogg lyrics during a live broadcast.
Barbara Bassett and her news crew talked about Snoop Dogg’s new wine, Snoop Cali Blanc, earlier this month. Wilson Stribling, one of the anchors, told Bassett that she should get a “Snoop Dogg tattoo on her shoulder.” Bassett replied with the words to the song.
There was no word from the station.
The Clarion-Ledger in Mississippi has asked Bassett and WLBT staff for their thoughts, but no one has said anything yet. Ted Fortenberry, Vice President and General Manager of WLBT, said, “I’m sure you understand that we can’t talk about staff issues.”
Bassett has been in trouble before for making controversial comments. In October 2022, she called a Black reporter “grandmammy,” which is an old slave word. At that time, Bassett said he was sorry.
“Today at 11′, I used a word that many of our listeners and my coworkers here at WLBT found offensive. Even though I didn’t mean to hurt anyone with my comment, I now see how it did “she told him back then. “That’s not who I am at my core. And for that, I beg you to forgive me, and I’m sorry to everyone I’ve hurt.”
Not everyone feels hurt.
Some people have said that Bassett’s “fo shizzle” comments were racist, but others think that the station went too far with its punishment.
Charlamagne is a radio host. During Bassett’s radio show, The Breakfast Club, the God spoke up for him.
“Come on, we got to like, stop, man. That’s not a good enough reason to fire her, “he said. “She probably doesn’t know that it comes from the N-word.”
