Freep Film Festival 2023: Church visit, Elvis Mitchell premiere highlight Thursday 2023
The second day of the 10th annual Freep Film Festival will feature six screenings and three special events across five venues. The schedule is available at freepfilmfestival.com. Here are some of Friday’s schedule’s highlights:

Series of Asian Pacific Islander Films
The Asian American Pacific Islander Film Series at Freep Film Festival, curated by Razi Jafri, co-director of “Hamtramck USA” as part of the 2021 film festival, highlights stories about Asian American communities and historical figures from across the country as told by Asian American filmmakers.
Thursday’s schedule includes a shorts program with four films, including one about a nonbinary Chinese aspiring nurse attempting to construct a life in Iowa and another about the rise of NBA point guard Jeremy Lin. The series includes six feature-length documentaries as well as a shorts program.
Thursday, Friday, and Sunday performances are held at the Detroit Historical Museum. The series is free, but reservations are required.
“Is That Dark Enough For You?!”
Elvis Mitchell, a renowned writer and film historian, analyzes the craft and power of African American filmmakers and stars from the landmark 1970s era in “Is That Black Enough For You?! Mitchell interviews director Charles Burnett, Samuel L. Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Laurence Fishburne, Zendaya, and others to gain their perspective on the era’s creators and films.
Mitchell, who debuts as a director with “Is That Black Enough For You?! “, is a product of Highland Park and a graduate of Wayne State University. Beginning in May 2023, he will serve as the Bob Allison (Allesee) Endowed Chair in Media at Washington State University. Michigan Premiere.
Elliot Wilhelm, the director of the Detroit Film Theatre, conducts interviews with director Mitchell and actor Fishburne after the screening. Saturday, Fishburne will be Mitchell’s guest during a live recording of his KCRW program “The Treatment.”
A limited number of tickets became available Wednesday morning for a post-film reception at the Detroit Institute of Arts featuring Mitchell. Purchase film and reception tickets.
Detroit Churches Tour Documentary
At one time, Detroit had more churches per square mile than any other metropolis in the country, serving a multiethnic and multireligious population.
Through interviews with seventeen various spiritual leaders of some of Detroit’s most historic churches, “Detroit: The City of Churches” gains a greater understanding of Detroit’s rich and diverse history. One of the ticket options for this film includes a post-film tour of two of the cathedrals featured in the documentary.

Meet the Publishers
The Meet the Editors event is designed for students, aspiring filmmakers, and others interested in documentary filmmaking. At an informal gathering, attendants will have the opportunity to converse and network with prominent documentary film editors.
