Scarlett Johansson on Bill Murray’s ‘Therapeutic’ Reunion 2023

Scarlett Johannson recalls the chance encounter she had with Bill Murray.

On Tuesday’s episode of the Goop podcast, the 38-year-old Black Widow actress revealed to host Gwyneth Paltrow that she unexpectedly bumped into her former co-star years after filming Lost in Translation.

“I didn’t see him for a decade or more. “It’s been a while,” Johansson began. “And then I walked into a bar with my ex-boyfriend from a long time ago… and there was only one person at the bar, and his name was Bill Murray.”

Johansson stated, “There was only one person at the bar, and it was Bill Murray.”

“It was so weird,” she continued. “When I walked in and saw him sitting there by himself, I exclaimed, ‘Oh my God!’ I was forced to exit. It occurred to me, ‘It’s Bill! I haven’t seen him in such a long time.'”

“It had been a decade, more than a decade since we last spoke. “All right, I guess I’ll have to go and see what’s going on.”

“It was such an odd occurrence. After all these years, seeing Murray, 72, there was “like a dream,” said the two-time Oscar nominee. “I then entered the room, and he was similarly startled. In fact, it was somewhat therapeutic. We spoke throughout that period.”

“I think it was difficult for him, too, because he had a lot going on with his family and his marriage,” Johansson recalled of their experiences filming Lost in Translation together. In addition, it appeared that he was unaware of our activities in Tokyo during those weeks.”

I think his management was insane. She said, “I don’t know, but we had a cathartic experience in that strange bar.”

Johansson and Murray portrayed opposite roles in Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola’s second feature film. The 2003 romantic comedy-drama follows unemployed actor Bob (Murray) as he travels to Tokyo to promote a liquor brand during his midlife crisis. There, he encounters recent college graduate Charlotte (Johansson), who is also uncertain about her future plans.

Murray is presently filming Being Mortal, despite being accused of sexual misconduct on set in April 2022. At the time, he told CNBC that he “had a difference of opinion” with a female production employee.

Since then, other actors, including Lucy Liu, Geena Davis, and Seth Green, have shared their negative experiences working with him.
